Jivan X. Ramesh Unveils We Are: A Sonic Journey into the Human Blueprint
Stony Brook, NY – April 15, 2025 — Composer and biochemist Jivan X. Ramesh announces the debut of We Are (2025), an innovative electronic composition that transforms biological data into sound. At the heart of this groundbreaking piece is the HOXA1 gene — a vital homeobox gene essential to early human development. By converting the amino acid sequence of HOXA1 into musical notes, Ramesh bridges science and sound to offer a profound auditory reflection on our shared human origins.
“We Are” is more than a composition — it is an exploration of what it means to be human. The piece translates the genetic language that helps shape our physical and cognitive identities into a visceral sonic experience. Through this, Ramesh invites listeners to consider the fundamental building blocks of life, and how something as microscopic as a gene carries the code for something as expansive as consciousness, emotion, and individuality.
“‘We Are’ is a meditation on unity,” says Ramesh. “In a world often divided by surface differences, this piece reminds us that deep within, we are written in the same code.”
By intertwining electronic textures with data-driven melodies, “We Are” opens a new frontier in bio-sonification — transforming raw biological information into an artistic expression that is at once deeply personal and universally resonant.
The piece will be premiered on April 25, 2025 at 7:30PM at the Sonic Springs concert at the Staller Center for the Arts in Stony Brook, New York.
