Bio
Jivan Xander Ramesh is a New York composer and cellist. He started playing cello and
composing at the age of three. At five, Jivan became the youngest string player to perform at
Carnegie Hall, and in the same year his composition, “Song of the Griffins”, was performed by
an ensemble at Madison Theater in New York.
Jivan composes in many musical styles and has won numerous composition competitions and
received commissions to compose pieces for festivals and orchestras. His compositions, both
for classical western instruments and for Chinese instruments, are part of the repertoire of
several professional musicians and musical ensembles. Jivan has had a number of memorable
performances of his compositions:
- “La Travesia”, was debuted by New York Philharmonic musicians at David Geffen Hall at
Lincoln Center, with Jivan joining on cello - “The Bird and Koi” was debuted at the Metropolitan Museum of NY
- “Dawn” was debuted at National Sawdust
Jivan is also an accomplished cellist who has won numerous scholarships, competitions and
has had many memorable performances:
- Soloist for the International Children’s Games Opening Ceremonies;
- Lead cello for the NY Chinese Music Ensemble;
- Performances with his Jazz ensemble at Staller Center for the Arts;
- Session musician for Film Scoring Ensemble at Berklee
Jivan is also very involved in musical theatre in NY:
- He arranged some of the music and performed in the Pit for the Off-Broadway
Performance of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Beautiful and the Damned” - He was the director of several musicals at a local venue.
- His musical theatre composition, “Fame” was performed at Joe’s Pub in NY
- Arrangements for “The Beautiful and the Damned” were performed at “Studio 54 Below”
Jivan believes in giving back to the community and spends time in volunteer work, for which he
has been recognized with several awards. He is the youngest recipient of the the Presidential
Volunteer Service Lifetime Achievement Award.
Jivan is a graduate of Juilliard PreCollege and he is currently a junior at SUNY Stony Brook in a
double major in music and biochemistry.
